RACINE
- Catherine Ann Hager, 66, passed away at her home on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, with her family at her side. A lifelong Racine
resident, Cathy was born on November 28, 1941, to John and Catherine Gladys (nee: LaPour) Powers. A Teacher for many years,
Cathy began and ended her career in education at Jefferson Lighthouse School. She first entered Jefferson in 1946 as a kindergartner,
following both her siblings and her mother, who first attended the school in 1913. Her children also attended the school in
the 1980's. Cathy later taught at Jefferson until her retirement in 2005. She cared deeply for the many students she taught
over the years. She received her Bachelor's Degree at Racine Dominican College and her Master's Degree through National-Louis
University. With Irish-born grandparents on both sides of her family, Cathy was proud of her Irish heritage. She enjoyed trips
to Ireland, where she was able to trace her family roots with her sister Mary. Irish decor festooned her home, where Celtic
music could often be heard. Cathy was a longtime volunteer with the Racine Literacy Council's annual Irish Night for Literacy,
the American Association of University Women, and other charitable organizations. Her other interests included the special
friendships of her bridge clubs, French culture, Impressionist art, and her lovely flower garden.
Cathy is survived by her sons, Matthew Hager (with Anna Marie Aiello) and Andrew Hager; daughter,
JoAnne Powers; sister, Mary Androff; sister-in-law, Sally Powers; niece, Missy Powers (with husband, Edward Aiello and their
children, Sydney and Samantha); nephew, John Powers (with wife, Amy Jo); and her beloved "adopted" daughter, Carla Dimitroff
- her Brazilian foreign exchange student. Cathy is also survived by other relatives and many close friends. She was preceded
in death by her parents; brother, John T. Powers; and brother-in-law, Bud Androff.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Cathy will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6400
Spring Street, on Monday, February 11, 2008, at 11 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Paul Esser. Inurnment will take place at Calvary
Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. and at
the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Memorials in Cathy's name may be directed to a fund towards a new
library learning center for Jefferson Lighthouse School.
