RACINE
- Herbert A. Schmidt, 75 passed away at Hospice House in Kenosha on Saturday, March 31, 2007. Herb was born in Milbank, S.D.
on November 2, 1931, to Herbert and Alta (nee: Schultz) Schmidt. He married the former Irene M. Pongo at Trinity Lutheran
Church in Racine on September 14, 1951. Herb graduated from Racine Lutheran High School in 1950. He served in the United States
Navy during the Korean War as a Corpsman and retired from the Naval Reserve after 34 years of service at the rank of Master
Chief. He also worked for two years as both an LPN and Operating Room Technician at St. Lukes Hospital in Racine. Herb graduated
from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He worked for, and received his teaching certificate from Dominican College. Herb
taught chemistry, biology, math, space science, earth science and physics at Racine Lutheran High School for nine years where
he headed the Science Department. Herb was employed by the Racine Water Department for 34 years, as Chemist and finally as
both Chemist and Plant Superintendent. He was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Sturtevant. Herb was involved in
the Racine Emergency Government for 20 years, serving as Radiological Instructor and as Shelter Management Instructor. He
was also a member of the Racine Geological Society and the Racine Astronomical Society. He was an active member for many years
in the Lake Michigan Water Analysts and the West Shore Water Producers. He was also a member of the American Water Works Association
where he received the highest award, the Fuller Award. Survivors include his wife, friend and constant companion, Irene M.
Schmidt; children, Mark (JoAnn) Schmidt, Kathy Kaplan, Julie (Dennis) Heusdens and Jane (Trent) Michels; grandchildren, Jason
Schmidt, Eric Schmidt, Jesse Kaplan and Kristina Schmidt; great-grandchildren, Sierra, Selina and Justin; step-mother, Eldora
Schmidt; brother, Ronald (Rose) Schmidt; and sister, Jocelyn (John) Janzow. Herb is also survived by nieces, nephews, other
relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and John Jenel; and
niece, Ivy Jenel. Funeral services for Herb will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 8500 Durand Avenue, on Wednesday, April
4, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Jeffrey Mortenson officiating. Friends may meet at the Church from 10 a.m. until the time
of the service. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral
home on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, from 5 until 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church, Racine Lutheran High
